In November, our dear friend and colleague Christian Westphal – Conor Phelan Construction’s longest-standing employee – received the devastating diagnosis of Motor Neuron Disease (MND). MND is a rare, progressive condition that affects the nerves, leading to the gradual loss of muscle control. It is an incredibly cruel illness that has brought profound uncertainty into Christian’s life and placed an enormous strain on his young family.
Christian has been a pillar of strength for those around him – a loving husband, father of two young sons, devoted son, brother, and friend. Throughout his years with Conor Phelan Construction, Christian’s work ethic, positivity and calm presence have left a lasting impression on all of us. Now, as he faces one of life’s toughest battles, we are coming together to offer our support.
As his condition progresses, Christian and his family must make major life adjustments. These include moving to a more accessible home and replacing their car to better suit Christian’s physical needs. Additional expenses lie ahead for medical treatments and vital equipment such as a wheelchair, hoist, breathing support, and other home modifications – all of which are essential for his comfort and mobility.
In response to this urgent situation, a fundraising campaign has been launched by Heidi Westphal (Christian’s sister), alongside Ger Loftus and Conor and Niamh Phelan.
We are reaching out to our wider community for help. Any contribution, no matter the size, will make a real difference in supporting Christian and his family through this incredibly difficult time. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing the campaign to help us spread the word.

With heartfelt thanks,
