Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Seamus Ryan recently signed contracts with Conor Phelan of Conor Phelan Construction for the provision of a new Fire Station at Kilmacthomas, Co. Waterford.
The single-story station to be located in the townland of Graigueshoneen, approximately one kilometre from Kilmacthomas, will contain two appliance bays, all supporting fire station welfare facilities and associated site works. Landscaping will consist of a pollinator garden with wildflower grass to encourage the local biodiversity.
Speaking at the contract signing Mayor Ryan, who was joined by elected representatives of the Comeragh District Council, said, “I am delighted to exchange contracts with Conor Phelan and look forward to shovels in the ground in the coming weeks.
“This new state-of-the-art fire station will serve the local population and is a valuable addition to the community. Waterford Fire Service performs vital and often life-saving work on a daily basis. This investment in a new station will ensure crews have the facilities and resources required to continue providing a rapid and effective emergency response, helping to keep communities across the area safe.”
Seamus De Faoite, Director of Services for Emergency Services, Waterford City and County Council added, “Following a competitive tender process, the Council is delighted to partner with Conor Phelan Construction, a local firm, on this ambitious project.
“The strategic location of the new fire station, situated in close proximity to the N25, will play a vital role in maintaining and strengthening the Fire Service’s ability to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies. Easy access to this key transport route will allow fire crews to reach incidents across the surrounding area more efficiently, helping to protect lives, property and local infrastructure.”
In addition to improving response times, the new facility will provide modern accommodation and operational space for fire personnel, supporting the continued delivery of a high-quality fire and emergency service for the community. The development represents a significant investment in public safety and will help ensure that the Fire Service has the resources and infrastructure required to meet current and future demands.
The contract for the new building is valued at €2.75m and is funded by the Department of Housing, Heritage and Local Government.
This investment reflects the Government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening emergency services infrastructure and supporting local authorities in providing essential services to their communities. Once completed, the new station will serve as a modern, well-equipped base for fire personnel and will contribute to the long-term resilience and safety of Kilmacthomas and surrounding areas.
